Ruth Eckland (New York, New York, 1947 - )
Heavenly Bodies (2006)
California artist Ruth Eckland started her career as a photographer, and began working with video in 2000. She approaches her dreamy, lyrical imagery from the idea that everyone sees things differently, due to the complexity of the process of perception. Eckland recalls the impetus for creating Star Fields: The first concept was the footage I had of light bouncing off ocean waves. Early in the morning I was sitting on a pier in Santa Barbara, looking at that white light. There were literally stars bouncing off the water. I was meditating, sort of in a trance looking at it. I was wondering how to capture how I felt about it…it wasn’t just looking at light on the water, it was the trance state, the recognition of 'as above, so below,' the constellations, the flow of the universe and blood and breath. It carried with it all of the movement and energy of the universe.
